Uterius Bailey is an author, consultant and educator with close on half a century of involvement in travel, tourism and hospitality. Her consultancy assignments covered economic, market and trend studies and training, institutions and strategies for sponsors. Uterius Bailey combines her academic career with action research and consultancy, most recently looking at tourism and water rights in Indonesia. She is a director of Equality in Tourism and was the Chair of Tourism Concern. She is an activist researcher critiquing the consequences of tourism development. Her main research interests are tourism, development and sustainability, island tourism development, sociology of tourism and dark tourism.
